Gardens tell stories. These stories tell of a yearning for Paradise, love, retreat, power, beauty. The Museum Rietberg invites you to take a stroll through the gardens of the world and the history of garden culture.
A promenade through the world's gardens, from Japan to England and from ancient Egypt through to modern times. Art works, photos and videos show how people living in various different cultures and eras longed for gardens – and how they created them.
«Gardens of the World» is more than an exhibition. A broad spectrum of events – always with a reference to gardens – ensures that visiting the museum is a treat for all the senses. Events include an herb market, a garden party, afternoon teas and workshops.

The Museum's villa garden, the Rieterpark, provides the grandiose setting for the «Gardens of the World» exhibition. The Rieterpark is one of Switzerland's most beautiful landscape gardens. It frames the exhibition and is, at the same time, also an integral part of it.

The Museum Rietberg is one of the major art museums in Switzerland. It is the only museum for non-European art and owns an internationally renowned collection featuring works from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.

Especially for the exhibition, the Museum Shop has become a Garden Shop, offering a range of attractive accessories and excellent quality garden tools. It also has seed bombs and garden gnome chalks for the little ones.

The exhibition «Gardens of the World» is part of The Year of the Garden 2016 – A space of encounters, a national campaign that supports the preservation and the development of gardens and public spaces.
